Bike tour from the Provence to the Mediterranean coast

This cycling trip leads you through the Provence as well as the Camargue and along the Mediterranean coast to end in Montpellier.

  • This short cycling trip will have you discover the charms of the Provence and Camargue region as well as the Mediterranean coast.
    Enjoy Avignon and experience provençal life in Saint Rémy de Provence and Les Baux de Provence and enjoy the smell and taste of local wares and produce on market day. From Avignon rich cultural heritage through Provençal olive groves and along herd of wild horses in the Camargue, your bike route leads straight to quaint towns like Arles. The end of your bike tour is on the Mediterranean cycle route along the shore.
    This 4-days tour has you combine visiting cultural sites, being amazed by wild nature but also swimming in the Mediterranean Sea!

    Avignon- Saint Rémy de Provence

    You leave the "Cité des Papes" and cycle in the countryside. Pass through the village of Cavaillon, famous for its watermelon. The next part of the route will lead you to Saint Remy de Provence, a very typical provencal village. Have a nice walk into its small streets and enjoy the taste of Provence!

    Saint Rémy de Provence-Arles

    You leave St Remy de Provence, a pitturesque village and ride along the Alpilles mountains to reach another typical village called "Les Baux de Provence". You cycle with a magnificent view over the moutains. This is the hardest part of the trip, we advise you to rent an electric bike if you are not used to cycle some hills. The next part of the route leads you towards Arles: enjoy the perfume of the olive trees along the way.

    Arles - Aigues Mortes

    Leave Arles and its beautiful Roman amphitheater to gradually enter the Camargue region and observe the wild horses and pink flamingos. On a beautiful cycle path, you reach the majestic Aigues-Mortes and enjoy an unparalleled view of its 13th century ramparts. Enjoy a nice stroll through its medieval streets and don’t miss visiting the salt marshes of Aigues-Mortes.

    Aigues-Mortes - Montpellier

    Leave the fortified town of Aigues-Mortes on a beautiful cycle path before arriving at Grau-du-Roi. You can also add a detour to Port Camargue, the largest marina in Europe and have relax at the superb Espiguette beach.

    You follow the Mediterranean shore and enjoy the beaches and dunes, before reaching the vibrant city of Montpellier.

    (If you’re not staying overnight in Montpellier, bikes must be dropped off at our rental bike partner in Mauguio. You can then take a direct tramway to Montpellier / Gare St Roch. Same thing for the luggage transport option).

    You’ll get a good night’s sleep staying in these 3-Star hotels or Bed and Breakfasts. All properties have been selected for their cleanliness, style and the friendliness of the staff. Some pieces of accomodation have a swimming-pool. A hearty breakfast is included!

    You’ll enjoy a higher level of service in these 3-4 Star properties. Properties are selected for their high standards and impeccable service. This category is for guests looking for a higher-end vacation. Of course, breakfast is included daily.

    On your arrival day, we provide you with:

    • a touring bike adjusted to your size or a tandem
    • equipped : front rack pack with an integrated file compartment, saddlebag, helmet (on demand), reflective vest, repairing toolkit with patches etc.

    We also provide you with the appropriate equipment for your children : baby seat, bike trailer or trailer bike depending on their age and size.

    Electric bikes are also available for adults (+1m55).

    You can of course also bring your own bikes, in this case a reduction will be applied (see the Tarif tab)


    Luggage


    For this trip, bikes are equipped with 2 waterproof saddle bags with a capacity of 10 to 20L each to transport your luggage. Do not forget to put your items in a soft travel bag to be able that you can roll it up in your saddle bags.

    For more comfort, you can choose to add luggage transport in your booking:
    (see rate in "Prices")

    • We transport your luggage from one accommodation to the next using a private vehicle.
    • Your luggage is directly delivered in your accommodation before you arrive.
    • We provide a saddlebag for the things you shall need during the day.(included in your bike rental).
    • We advise to take an extra set of clothes with you if you expect to arrive before 5p.m. at your accommodation.

    Our word of advice : as we know from experience, we strongly recommend you to avoid wearing a backpack during your cycling trip.


    Travel documents

    A cycling holiday is the best way to explore a region and discover its culture, landscapes and local traditions.

    Your tour is self-guided to give you the freedom to ride at your own pace. You will be provided all the information you need to enjoy the itinerary and its points of interests.

    We can provide you with travel documents in paper format (for a supplement of €15 for printing and postage), which include:
    • a roadbook with maps that we drew at the easiest scale to follow on a bike
    • a roadbook with step-by-step description giving the direction to follow at each intersection and highlighting the points of interest

    Our GPS App

    For this trip, you can also use our smartphone app featuring GPS guidance (without extra fee).

    You will find in the app all the information given in the map and step-by-step roadbooks. You will be located on the itinerary with the GPS device of your phone. The route and directions to follow will be both viewable on the screen of your phone and announced aloud. As you ride along the itinerary, you will be given information about visits, restaurants, services and useful alerts on the way.

    -> You need to have a smartphone and download Le Velo Voyageur app on your Apple or Android store before the trip. All details concerning the downloading and the use of the application will be given after we have confirmed the booking and the balance is paid. Once the trip is downloaded, the GPS guidance can be used off-line.

  • To get to departure point:

    • By plane: flight to Avignon, Marseille Provence or Nîmes

    • By train: The train station of Avignon is well connected to the railway network and you can easily access the station from many cities in France and Europe.     Parking :

    If you drive to Avignon, you can park your car in the car park in the city center (10€/24h).

    The location and contact details of the car parks will be given in your travel documents.


    To get back to the departing point :

    You take the regional train if you wish to return to your starting point. Trains do not require reservations and accept bicycles free of charge. Tickets must be purchased on the spot (full fare approx. €18/adult). There are several trains during the day. You will find the timetables in your travel documents.

    If you have taken the luggage transfer option, you can collect your luggage from 5pm at the drop-off point.


    Meeting time:

    The first day is a cycling day. We recommend you to arrive maximum in the late morning to enjoy your day fully without rushing. The renting bikes will be available from 9:30am.

    If you have taken the luggage transfer option, you must drop off your luggage before 9am. at our drop-off point. The bike collection and luggage drop-off points are located in the city centre, not far from near the SNCF station and will be indicated in your travel documents.
