“ A wonderful bike tour despite the bad weather! ”
We have just returned to Canada after a vacation in Europe that included visiting friends and family, but also involved a self-guided bike trip from Avignon to Sete, organized by Le Vélo Voyageur. Daily rides were about 50k in length, and before leaving, we had visions of leisurely rides in spring sunshine in the south of France. Mother Nature had a different experience in mind! It was very very windy and we experienced winds every day sometimes between 50-70 km per hour, usually working against us or from the side. We also had some wet driving rain, including one day of very heavy downpours. However, thanks to the fact that we were riding e-bikes, we arrived at our lovely hotels each afternoon with enough time and energy to enjoy the towns and cities and all their roman and medieval histories. Our luggage was waiting for us and most of the hotels were situated very close to interesting sites. From the Palais de Papes of Avignon, to the Roman Amphitheater of Arles, to the medieval city walls of Aigues-Mortes, the history of the area was fascinating and amazing. Throw in rides through picturesque orchards, vineyards, and olive groves, a glorious ride through the Alpilles between Saint-Rémy & Les Baux (thank you ebikes!, as well as the flamingos and horses in the Camargue, and you have a wonderful combination of history and nature, all in the same route. We thoroughly enjoyed the trip. It was well organized and everything went smoothly.
