Itinerary

This 4-day bike trip in Belgium will be full of surprises! We organized a loop tour to have you discover the most-see places of the Ardennes and the most beautiful landscapes against a backdrop of the banks of the Meuse.

Ride through a rich countryside, small villages where time stands still or along the riverbanks.

Dinant, Marche, Durbuy, Huy or Namur: there is so much to explore! This long weekend on your bike will also be an opportunity to taste the Belgian specialities. You cannot leave the region without enjoying French fries, taking great pleasure to drink a beer or eat some chocolate… all of this paired with the renowned Belgian good mood!

Day 1

Arrival in Dinant		Arrival in Dinant Let’s go for an adventure! Dinant, the small Ardennes town, is your starting point and is full of numerous tourist attractions. Take the time to admire the colorful houses on the banks of the Meuse, to discover its Merveilleuse cave, without forgetting its citadel, accessible by cable car or, for the more courageous, via some 408 steps. Have fun spotting the many decorated saxophones scattered throughout Dinant in honor of Adolphe Sax, the inventor of the saxophone and native of the city, before getting on your bike.

Day 2

Dinant - Marche-en-Famenne Altitude ±600m Bike 50/64km		Dinant - Marche-en-Famenne Altitude ±600m Bike 50/64km Take your time to discover Dinant, the Citadel city with its many tourist attractions: stroll into the streets looking for the numerous saxophones (Adolphe Sax, the inventor or the musical instrument was born here), climb up the 408 steps to arrive at the citadel or discover the charms of the banks of the Meuse before cycling. You ride slightly upwards onto small countryside roads and reach Ciney where the beers-lovers will be happy to enjoy a delicious beverage (in moderation of course). You cross charming villages and arrive in the Famennes area with the lively city of Marche where you can learn more about the regional traditions. For the more adventurous, you can make a detour to Rochefort, the city famous for its Trappist beer and its castle.

Day 3

Marche-en-Famenne - Huy area Altitude ±470m Bike 62/70km		Marche-en-Famenne - Huy area Altitude ±470m Bike 62/70km Get onto your bike and ride onto a pleasant cycle path to reach Hotton. Here, you can explore the undergrounds of the caves and believe yourself to be Indiana Jones. Follow your route and cross small villages such as Ny where time seems to stand still and enjoy a lush countryside. Take a break in Durbuy, the "smallest city of the world" where you can make the most of the beautiful landscapes and historical heritage with its well-preserved city-center, its topiary park or even its castle. Old stone lovers? Do not miss the castles of Radhadesh or Modave riding at your own pace on the comfortable cycle path to Huy. Here, visit the impressive fort reconverted into a remembrance place of WWII or find out about the wall of Huy, famous for being part of "La Flèche wallonne" professional cycling race.

Day 4

Huy - Dinant Altitude ±185m Bike 60/66km		Huy - Dinant Altitude ±185m Bike 60/66km After two stages to explore the Ardennes, today is a step along the riverside. You follow the Meuse and the surroundings all-day long. First visit the city of Andenne and the caves of Scaldina before arriving in Namur, the capital of Wallonia. Make a stop at the citadel to admire the work of Vauban before riding back to Dinant. You will enjoy breathtaking landscapes for the second part of your step. From the top of the viewing point of "Seven Meuses", from the ruins of the feudal castle of Poilvache or from the water garden of Annevoie, you will be amazed by the diversity of the region before riding back to Dinant and enjoy its particular atmosphere. It is time to say goodbye, unless you decide to extend your stay?

You will get a good night’s sleep when you stay in these 3 or 4-star hotels or charming Bed & Breakfasts. All properties have been selected for their cleanliness, style and friendliness of the staff. A hearty breakfast is included!

Bikes, luggage and documents

Bikes

On your arrival day, we provide you with:

a touring bike adjusted to your size or a tandem

equipped : front rack pack with an integrated file compartment, saddlebag, helmet (on demand), reflective vest, repairing toolkit with patches etc.

We also provide you with the appropriate equipment for your children : baby seat, bike trailer or trailer bike depending on their age and size.

Electric bikes are also available for adults (+1m55).

You can of course also bring your own bikes, in this case a reduction will be applied (see the Tarif tab)

Luggage

For this trip, bikes are equipped with 2 waterproof saddle bags with a capacity of 10 to 20L each to transport your luggage. Do not forget to put your items in a soft travel bag to be able that you can roll it up in your saddle bags.

For more comfort, you can choose to add luggage transport in your booking:

We transport your luggage from one accommodation to the next using a private vehicle.
Your luggage is directly delivered in your accommodation before you arrive.
We provide a saddlebag for the things you shall need during the day.(included in your bike rental).
We advise to take an extra set of clothes with you if you expect to arrive before 5p.m. at your accommodation.

Our word of advice : as we know from experience, we strongly recommend you to avoid wearing a backpack during your cycling trip.

Travel documents

A cycling holiday is the best way to explore a region and discover its culture, landscapes and local traditions.

Your tour is self-guided to give you the freedom to ride at your own pace. You will be provided all the information you need to enjoy the itinerary and its points of interests.

We can provide you with travel documents in paper format (for a supplement of €15 for printing and postage), which include:

a roadbook with maps that we drew at the easiest scale to follow on a bike
a roadbook with step-by-step description giving the direction to follow at each intersection and highlighting the points of interest

Our GPS App

For this trip, you can also use our smartphone app featuring GPS guidance (without extra fee).

You will find in the app all the information given in the map and step-by-step roadbooks. You will be located on the itinerary with the GPS device of your phone. The route and directions to follow will be both viewable on the screen of your phone and announced aloud. As you ride along the itinerary, you will be given information about visits, restaurants, services and useful alerts on the way.

-> You need to have a smartphone and download Le Velo Voyageur app on your Apple or Android store before the trip. All details concerning the downloading and the use of the application will be given after we have confirmed the booking and the balance is paid. Once the trip is downloaded, the GPS guidance can be used off-line.

Practical information

To get to the departure point:

By plane: flight to Brussels and then train to Dinant.

By train: direct train from Brussels-Luxembourg station (duration: 1h20) or from Namur (duration: 30 minutes). To plan your trip: https://www.raileurope.com/en

Parking:

If you drive to Dinant, you can park your car in a park located next to our bike partner's premises for free.

You can also park in a secured car-park located in the city-center of Dinant. All details for the parking will be given in your travel documents.

Meeting time:

You pick up your bikes in the morning between 9.30am and 12pm. We recommend you to arrive at around 10am to enjoy your day fully without rushing and be able to do the visits on the way.

We advise to book an extra night in Dinant, at the beginning and/or at the end of your trip if you plan to visit the numerous tourist attractions of the city.

If you chose luggage transport, you must arrive before 10am to drop off your luggage. Bikes pick up point and luggage drop off point are located next to the train station and will be given in your travel documents.

Agréable voyage avec quelques belles montées. La distance entre chaque étape rend difficile les pauses culturelles. Un vélo adapté au relief est nécessaire.

It was an excellent trip and Le Velo Voyageur did a great job. The customer service before and during the trip was excellent. The hotels were just right, and I appreciated that they had hotels make arrangements to store the bike -- and, at the first hotel, reserved time in the spa for me. The segments of the trip were just long enough to be challenging but not overwhelming. The fact that the last day was somewhat easier (flat) was very welcome. I was particularly impressed with the app. I have a very bad sense of direction and the turn by turn voice guidance was very specific and essentially fool proof. I will (actually already have) highly recommended LVV to others.
