This 5 days tour will have you biking inside the Camargue and its wild beauty. You will discover its animals, its salt marshes but also its wonderful coast.

  • Itinerary
    • This 4-day bike trip will have you discover to the treasures of Southern France and the Camargue. Stroll through Arles and its quaint city center, visit its Roman amphitheater before leaving for the Camargue with a first stop in Les Saintes-Maries-de-la-Mer. On your way you will see white horses, flamingos and bulls that embodies the region.
    Dive into the region Camargue by stopping at the pond of Vaccarès or by visiting the ornithological park of Pont-du-Gau. The next day, you will ride through the countryside to reach Aigues Mortes, a fortified city famous for its purple salt marshes, which can be visited by mini-train.
    The last stop of this cycling trip allows you one last time to be immersed in the very special atmosphere of Camargue before returning to your starting point: Arles.

    Day 1
     
     

    Arrival in Arles

    Arrival in the city of Van Gogh. Enjoy a stroll into the streets to discover its Roman heritage and relax in your accomodation.

    Day 2
     
     

    Arles-Saintes Maries de la Mer

    Stroll into the streets of Arles and visit its arena and amphitheater. Leave the city using a cycle path to proceed into Camargue where you will enjoy a dry and wild nature. Meet white wild horses and bulls in the countryside!
    You finish the day in "Les Saintes Maries de la Mer", a beautiful and typical village from the region. Have a walk in the marina and enjoy the beautiful lights of the sunset.

    Bird park loop

    The smallest loop will lead you deep inside the Camargue region. Discover "Mas" (typical regional houses) but also "manades" (where you can practise horseriding). Finish your day at the ornithological parc called le Pont du Gau. It is a must see for birds lover! You can discover a lot of gorgeous pink flamingos and many other species of birds for an marvellous experience!
     

    Vaccares pond loop

    By choosing the long option, you will discover Vaccarès pond, a perfect place to experience the regional fauna and flora. First cycle along the seashore and enjoy the view before riding all around the pond.

    If you want to relax in Saintes-Maries, you can either try horseriding or boating.

    Saintes Maries de la Mer- Aigues Mortes

    You follow the road along the vineyards and reach today Aigues Mortes, a fortified town. You can enjoy a walk inside the city and visit its salt marshes. Do not miss the visit by small train to discover the process of collecting salt. You will enjoy the purple waters full of salt but also the beautiful view over Aigues Mortes ramparts. You have to opportunity to continue riding to the sea by reaching Le-Grau-du-Roi at the end of your step.

    Aigues Mortes-Arles

    You leave the small city of Aigues Mortes and its salt marshes and cycle on the ViaRhôna. You ride along the "Petit Rhône" and proceed into Camargue. One last time, you can observe the wild animals of the area. The natural landscapes will disappear little by little as you reach the beautiful city of Arles. it is time to say goodbye to the region... unless you decide to extend your stay!

  • Bikes, luggage and documents
    • Bikes

    On your arrival day, we provide you with:

    • a touring bike adjusted to your size or a tandem
    • equipped : front rack pack with an integrated file compartment, saddlebag, helmet (on demand), reflective vest, repairing toolkit with patches etc.

    We also provide you with the appropriate equipment for your children : baby seat, bike trailer or trailer bike depending on their age and size.
    Electric bikes are also available for adults (+1m55).

    You can of course also bring your own bikes, in this case a reduction will be applied (see the Tarif tab)


    Luggage


    For this trip, bikes are equipped with 2 waterproof saddle bags with a capacity of 10 to 20L each to transport your luggage. Do not forget to put your items in a soft travel bag to be able that you can roll it up in your saddle bags.

    For more comfort, you can choose to add luggage transport in your booking:
    (see rate in "Prices")

    • We transport your luggage from one accommodation to the next using a private vehicle.
    • Your luggage is directly delivered in your accommodation before you arrive.
    • We provide a saddlebag for the things you shall need during the day.(included in your bike rental).
    • We advise to take an extra set of clothes with you if you expect to arrive before 5p.m. at your accommodation.

    Our word of advice : as we know from experience, we strongly recommend you to avoid wearing a backpack during your cycling trip.


    Travel documents

    A cycling holiday is the best way to explore a region and discover its culture, landscapes and local traditions.

    Your tour is self-guided to give you the freedom to ride at your own pace. You will be provided all the information you need to enjoy the itinerary and its points of interests.

    We can provide you with travel documents in paper format (for a supplement of €15 for printing and postage), which include:
    • a roadbook with maps that we drew at the easiest scale to follow on a bike
    • a roadbook with step-by-step description giving the direction to follow at each intersection and highlighting the points of interest

    Our GPS App

    For this trip, you can also use our smartphone app featuring GPS guidance (without extra fee).

    You will find in the app all the information given in the map and step-by-step roadbooks. You will be located on the itinerary with the GPS device of your phone. The route and directions to follow will be both viewable on the screen of your phone and announced aloud. As you ride along the itinerary, you will be given information about visits, restaurants, services and useful alerts on the way.

    -> You need to have a smartphone and download Le Velo Voyageur app on your Apple or Android store before the trip. All details concerning the downloading and the use of the application will be given after we have confirmed the booking and the balance is paid. Once the trip is downloaded, the GPS guidance can be used off-line.
  • Practical information
    • To get to departure point:

    • By plane: flight to Lyon, Avignon, Montpellier or Marseille + regional train.

    • By train: trains from Paris Gare de Lyon station (direct or with 1 channge) The duration of the trip is around 3h55.

    Parking

    If you drive to Arles, you can park your car at the free parking at Arles station (avenue Paulin Talebot). All details will be given in your travel documents.
    Meeting time:


    You pick up your bikes in the morning between around 10 am. We recommend you to arrive around 10am to enjoy your day fully without rushing and be able to do the visits on the way.

    “ Belle région ”

    Nous sommes ravies d'avoir découvert la Camargue. Ne pas hésiter à arriver un jour plus tôt à Arles qui mérite bien deux jours de visite (monuments, musées, vielles rues...) Les Saintes-Maries de la Mer sont une très jolie station balnéaire (ne pas manquer la balade en bateau sur le petit Rhône et la visite du parc ornithologique), Aigues-Mortes est une belle ville avec ses remparts + visiter les Salins du Midi. L'application est très bien faite et évite de se perdre. Les hôtels choisis sont très corrects avec une mention spéciale pour celui d'Arles, très bien situé, beaucoup de charme. Le personnel partout très sypathique. En revanche, il faut savoir que la moitié au moins du parcours se fait sur des routes parfois très fréquentées avec une piste cyclable, quand elle existe, pas sécurisée.

    Séjour réalisé en famille avec un enfant de 11 ans sans difficulté. Les étapes sont bien équilibrées et permettent à la fois de s'immerger dans la nature camarguaise et de se réserver chaque jour des temps de visites nature/culture pour varier les plaisirs. Il faut juste penser à bien vérifier à l'avance les horaires d'ouverture des différents sites. Les hébergements sont très bien et accueillants. Nous avons beaucoup apprécié ce tour.

    Super parcours en Camargue. Les hôtels étaient très bien situés, avec une mention particulière pour celui de Arles qui en plus était très bien et très serviable. Celui de Aigues Mortes avait le défaut d'une chambre très petite. A Saintes Maries, n'hésitez pas à allonger le séjour pour effectuer les 2 boucles et ne pas choisir entre elles. Seule remarque : vérifiez que la voix de l'application parle correctement le français.

    1er jour arrivée à l’hôtel de charme idéalement placée au centre de la ville. Véhicule laissé au parking du centre pour 4 jours 48 €. Visite de la ville 2eme jour vers les Saintes Marie. 1ere partie sur les petites routes partagées ’peu de voitures ’ au milieu des pâturages et vergers. 2ème partie le long des étangs, très joli paysage mais chemins très caillouteux et poussiéreux un peu pénible mais grâce aux belles photos à prendre on fait de nombreuses pauses. Attention difficile pour trouver à se restaurer sur le parcours. 3eme jour on choisit la petite boucle de 18km car temps pluvieux et peur d’un trajet de 60km sur chemins caillouteux. Longue ballade dans le parc ornithologique ou on voit de nombreux oiseaux , flamands roses.... et aussi des ragondins .cette visite est à recommander. Magnifiques photos à faire. Ballade de 2 heures à cheval l’après midi . L’hôtel est très sympa Quoique un peu éloigné du centre. En soirée belle ballade à pied le long des étangs pour se rendre en ville et voir les belles petites villas de guardians en toit de roseaux. Restaurants à recommander ’le jardin des délices et la table du 9. 4ème jour, on rejoint Aiguës Mortes en partie par des routes partagées mais très chargées en voitures. La 1ere partie est sympa avec traversée par un bac partagé aussi par des chevaux. 5eme jour, on retourne vers Arles par la Viarhona, piste cyclo le long du Rhône. Arrêt à Saint Gilles pour visiter l’abbatiale et dernière partie sur une petite route partagée très calme sauf le vent dans le nez. A l’arrivée on a rdv avec le loueur pour l’échange vélos bagages qui accepte gentiment de nous déposer devant le parking. Merci

    J'ai décidé de faire ce parcours toute seule car j'avais envie de découvrir la Camargue et faire du velo. C'était une expérience très enrichissant pour moi et grâce au vélo voyageur je n'ai eu a m'inquiéter de rien d'autre que rouler et profiter. Le seul regret est le prix et les suppléments pour voyager seul.

    Taureaux en liberté, blancs chevaux sauvages et enfin de centaines des flamands roses qu’on peut côtoyer au Parc Ornithologique de Pont de Gau; dizaine de kilomètres sans traces de l’activité de l’Homme; du vent (beaucoup de vent!), main invisible qui peut t’aider ou ralentir; quatre jours de découvertes d’une nature préservée.
