  • In the heart of Catalonia, in Costa Brava’s inland lies the famous wine region Emporda.

    From Girona, you reach gradually the Mediterranean Sea and ride down the coast between sea and mountains. Discover medieval villages of Northern Emporda, including Castellò Empúries and Peralada enjoy on your way the delicious fruity wines.

    You discover a valley with fairly dry landscape with vineyards and olive trees that rise gently on the foot of the Pyrenees. This cycling trip ends in Figueres, Dali’s favorite city, known for its famous ramblas.

    Arrival in Girona

    Discover the baroque old town of Girona. Visit the cathedral, a splendor of Gothic architecture and the medieval Jewish quarter, one of the best preserved worldwide.

    You walk around the ramparts to admire the magnificent panorama on the city.

    Girona – Sant Feliu de Guixols

    From Girona you bike leisurely towards the coast. You will walk along the former railway track "El carrilet" long used as a means of transporting the goods cork. You will then reach Sant Feliu with its seaport and its historical city, beautifully illustrated by his old Benedictine monastery of the 10th century.

    Sant Feliu de Guixols – Calella de Palafrugell

    Your bike trip leads you along the coast to the bay of Palamos where large fishing villages (Platja d’Aro) and small villages of the Iberian coast (Cala Castell) are worth visiting. You stop at the unspoilt cove Platja de Castell, with it’s Iberian settlement on the left side. It’s the ideal place to picnic and take a swim in the Mediterranean sea. For the last section of today’s route you ride on a greenway built on a former railway taking you directly to the picturesque old fishing village Calella de Palafrugell, one of the pearls of Costa Brava.

    Calella de Palafrugell – Torroella de Montgri

    You continue your bike trip along the coast towards the northern region of the Emporda. Arrive in Palafurgell, with its fish, meat and vegetables markets. You can also visit here the Cork museum. The ride take you through natural wetlands with extensive rice fields and long sandy beaches. You discover villages where a rich medieval past has been preserved such as Pals and Torroella de Montgri.

    Torroella de Montgri – Castellò d’Empúries

    After the Montgri uplands you reach the bay of Roses with its long sandy beaches and numerous natural resources.

    Close to the medieval town of Sant Mari de Empúries you visit the archaeological site and remains of the Gallo-Roman period dating from 600 BC. JC. The city of Empúries was an important market place of the Roman Empire.

    You continue North through the protected marshlands of Aiguamolls de l’Emporda and arrive at the wonderful medieval village Castellò Empúries located in the heart of the natural park of the Aiguamolls.

    This route starting in Castello d’Empuries offers stunning views on the Pyrenees from old vineyards. On your way, you will have the opportunity to taste the delicious fruity wines of the most renowned wineries in the Emporda located in the towns of Pau and Vilajuïga.     Castello d’Empuries – Figueres

    Today you are heading to Peralade, where you visit the castle and medieval town. From there you ride through a green and wild countryside passing by Garriguella, Vilamaniscle and Rabos with the most ancient groves. You stop to visit the modern cellar of Espolla, before riding down to Figueres. Enjoy the visit of the worl famous Theatre-Museum Dalo

    Departure from Figueres

    You walk through this little gem of architecture, have an ice cream on the Ramblas and stroll through the amazing Dali museum.

    On your arrival day, we provide you with:

    • a touring bike adjusted to your size or a tandem
    • equipped : front rack pack with an integrated file compartment, saddlebag, helmet (on demand), reflective vest, repairing toolkit with patches etc.

    We also provide you with the appropriate equipment for your children : baby seat, bike trailer or trailer bike depending on their age and size.

    Electric bikes are also available for adults (+1m55).

    You can of course also bring your own bikes, in this case a reduction will be applied (see the Tarif tab)


    Luggage

    Our services include luggage transport in order to let you enjoy your trip comfortably and without stress :
    • We transport your luggage from one accommodation to the next using a private vehicle.
    • Your luggage is directly delivered in your accommodation before you arrive.
    • We provide a saddlebag for the things you shall need during the day.

    Our word of advice : as we know from experience, we strongly recommend you to avoid wearing a backpack during your cycling trip.
    If you expect to arrive at the next accommodation before 5 p.m., we recommend that you take an extra set of clothes with you in your bicycle bag.


    Travel documents

    A cycling holiday is the best way to explore a region and discover its culture, landscapes and local traditions.

    Your tour is self-guided to give you the freedom to ride at your own pace. You will be provided all the information you need to enjoy peacefully the itinerary and its interesting sites.

    Travel documents will be handed out on site the day of your arrival. Travel documents are written in English.

    You will have in your travel documents :
    • your day-by-day program with your accommodations
    • detailedes map (A4 format) of your itinerary for each day
    • a step-by-step description of the itinerary (bound A5 format) giving the direction to follow at each intersection

  • Practical information
  • To get to departure point:

    • By plane:
    Flight to Gerona and shuttle to the city center
    Flight to Barcelona. You take than a local train to Barcelona Sants (22 min) then a regional train to Gerona (38 min)

    On request a shuttle service is available.


    To get back to starting point:

    Regional trains take you back to your starting point if you wish. They are accessible without booking in advance. You have to buy your ticket on spot (full rate 5.45€/adult). There are several trains per day.

    We can also organise a transfer in a private vehicule on demand.


    Meeting time:

    The first day is an arrival day without cycling. You arrive whenever you want depending on from where you come. Please note that rooms are usually available in the middle of the afternoon depending on your accommodation. We thank you to advise us if you plan to arrive late.

    Une fois encore, nous avons été pleinement satisfaits par l'organisation et les découvertes proposées par le Vélo voyageur! Beau voyage, nature la plupart du temps magnifiques, belles observations d'oiseaux au fil du chemin et dans les parcs naturels...Et quel chance de pouvoir se faire transporter ses bagages d'une étape à l'autre! Nous recommandons sans hésiter ce voyage!

    Another great custom trip organised by Vélo Voyageur. Great scenery, from beaches to hill-top villages to vineyards. Lovely route mostly on gravel paths or very quiet roads. Logistics and organisation all excellent. 14 very happy people!

    Nous avons très apprécié notre voyage. Le parcours proposé est parfait . Belle diversité de paysage,hébergement très bien situé et très confortable.

    La Costa Brava à vélo

    Nous avons eu beaucoup de plaisir à parcourir la Catalogne en vélo. Il s’agissait de notre troisième voyage avec le Vélo Voyageur. Le parcours en 8 jours de Gérone à Figueres, en passant par la Costa Brava, est très facile à suivre. Le paysage est varié, le trajet traversant des pâturages, des vignes, des oliveraies, des rizières, des vergers, des villages médiévaux, un site gréco-romain, des forêts de chêne-liège et la côte méditerranéenne. C’est merveilleux de se jeter à la mer, ou dans la piscine de l’hôtel, à la fin d’une journée de bicyclette. Trois visites de vignobles et chais étaient prévues et nous en avons réservé une quatrième visite par nous-même. Les trois visites prévues étaient variées : un petit vignoble agrobiologique, une coopérative d’huile d’olive et de vin, et un charmant vignoble de montagne proposant des vins plus structurés.

    Ce beau circuit nous a fait découvrir des villes et paysages de la Costa Brava comme de l'intérieur de l'Emporda. Le parcours, sans grandes difficultés, emprunte des petites routes, des chemins de terre et des voies vertes. Très bon accueil sur place, aussi bien du correspondant local que dans les hébergements.
